About Steve

With more than four decades dedicated to upholstery and fine furniture, Steve began his career through a traditional bench apprenticeship, learning under the careful and exacting guidance of master upholsterers. That early training shaped the craftsmanship, precision and respect for traditional methods that remain at the heart of his work today.

In England, Steve went on to own three successful businesses. One specialised in the manufacture of new bespoke furniture, another offered traditional reupholstery services, and the third focused on reproducing classic Knole sofa designs. Throughout his career he worked alongside respected London based interior designers including Maurizio Pellizzoni, as well as esteemed organisations such as National Trust, English Heritage, Liberty London, The Sloane Club, the antique trade, and Portman Designs, suppliers to Harrods and The Savoy Hotel.

Several years after emigrating from England, Stephen Mark Limited was established in North Canterbury, New Zealand. Today, Steve continues to create bespoke statement pieces of furniture that are classically designed and meticulously crafted. Each frame is constructed using New Zealand Southland Beech, selected for its strength and durability, and finished with carefully tailored upholstery that reflects both tradition and individual client style.

Steve and his wife Zoë share a deep appreciation for design, fabric and colour. Together, they guide clients through the creative process, ensuring every detail is thoughtfully considered. To further expand the creative possibilities, they are excited to include Troynorth Trimmings and Warwick Fabrics within their product offering. These beautiful fabric collections, along with coordinated tassel tie backs, trims and braids that have been trusted in their own work since 2007, are now available for clients wishing to create their own bespoke pieces.

To provide complete confidence in colour and texture selections, a sample service is available. By simply selecting the Can I have a Sample option on any product, a swatch or sample length can be sent, allowing clients to see and feel the materials in their own space before making a final decision.
